id="mod_28360539">Nepal: A Colorful Mix of Cultures

The population of Nepal is a like a group of tribes — generally known as castes — who co-exist (though not all the time peacefully) and intermingle, but they are nonetheless very distinct. A melting pot it is not.

Included in the combination are three foremost ethnic teams and greater than forty castes talking over one hundred languages. There are also Tibetan refugees, Buddhist monks from the entire world, transplants and seasonal staff from India, and Western expats residing full-time within the country.

Nepali folks usually put on colorful clothes and, to my Western eyes, are quite exotic. I was fascinated by the myriad of cultures and customs, often so different from my very own.

I’m not a photographer per se, however I did get hooked on taking pictures while I was in Nepal for 3 months. At first, I used to be very shy about taking photos of individuals, but I gained confidence and, I dare say, some talent as time went on. The following are a handful of the lots of of photos of the Nepali folks I took throughout my stay. I hope you’ll take pleasure in these photographs.

All images on this web page are the property of Deb Kingsbury–that can be me–and will not be used for any objective with out permission. Be at liberty to contact me through my profile hyperlink if you’d like to use something here, and I’ll almost certainly say yes, so long as credit and a hyperlink are given.

Individuals of Nepal…. – A Holy Man (or is he?) at Boudha Stupa in Kathmandu, Nepal

This can be a sadu or holy man. Or he appears to be, that is. I used to be advised there are "fakes," who gown that way for better luck with panhandling. I am unable to say for positive if he was the true thing or not. Then again, to me, it did not really matter.

An old Buddhist monk at Bouhda Stupa in Kathmandu.

Make that a nun? I have been corrected by someone who’s actually spoken to this girl on the stupa on more than one occasion, discovering her in the identical spot a year later.

I took another photograph of this individual on a unique day, sporting a vivid blue, knit Nike cap. In that image, she’s sitting in the identical place, carrying her robes and holding prayer beads precisely the same manner.

This was also taken at Boudha Stupa in Kathmandu. I don’t know what she was looking at or what her reaction means.

Two ladies, a child, and a tailor in Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal. I did not see the individual in shadow within the doorway after i took the image.

Just past this quiet sq., the road was filled with individuals, bicycles, mopeds, vehicles, canines and even an occasional chicken.

I like this little girl’s smile. I pointed to my camera, gesturing to ask her permission, and she smiled even wider.

I took this photograph of the Nepali youngster while stuck in traffic. I was in a sweltering taxi, on the way to the airport in Kathmandu to fly to the smaller metropolis of Pokhara. I didn’t have a lot time to spare when i finally acquired to the airport.

Not an uncommon scene in Kathmandu, I am afraid. This was taken at the temple Boudha Stupa.

I was told this man, like a number of others seen panhandling in the world, had leprosy, but I don’t know if that was true.

Taken in Kathmandu. I assumed a mother or father or guardian was close by, but I did not see anyone obviously watching him.

A Nepali pal told me that it isn’t uncommon for folks to put their small kids along the streets to panhandle (or simply sit subsequent to a dish to gather money), whereas Mom or Dad watches from nearby. Apparently, they want the youngsters to look like orphans so as to gain sympathy … and cash. I did discover a bit plate subsequent to (to the fitting in the photograph) this little boy, but there was nothing in it, so I am not sure if that was for donations.

A man prays at Boudha Stupa. He would stand up, gesture, take a step, lie down, and so forth, continuing around the stupa a number of times.

I saw this identical sort of worship going on even when the stupa was extremely crowded. Individuals would just stroll past and even step over those mendacity down.

A Nepali man and his prayer beads

I really like this second between mates.

Taken at Boudha Stupa in Kathmandu. To me, that is one in every of my best shots.

Plowing rice paddies in Pokhara, Nepal. These are water buffalo.

As my friends and that i had been hiking up a steep hill overlooking Phewa Lake, we walked alongside terraced rice paddies in various phases of development. Some, like this one, have been just being ready for re-planting, while others were ready for harvest, and others but have been nonetheless growing.

    A Guide To Nepal’s Tradition – I want I’d read this Earlier than I went to Nepal….

…but it surely was fascinating to read by way of a good friend’s copy once i got back. I did lots of nodding and learned extra about what I might experienced when I used to be there.

Nepal – Tradition Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture

One reviewer writes: "I purchased this e book earlier than traveling to Nepal on a medical mission earlier this year. If you solely have time to read one ebook about Nepal-this needs to be the one! Written by a woman who lived in Nepal for two years,Ms.Feller captures everything it’s essential to know to arrange you for the tradition of this fascinating country. Had I not read the book, I’d have been unaware of the importance of unusual details i.e. extra lengthy fingernail, physique language-sideways rocking of the pinnacle, and so on. The book is small and easy to pack. Miller22

My very own ancestral village is on the border of India and Nepal with river flowing in between and the majestic snow clad mountains of Himalayas could be seen very near.

I love this lens! hihihi! learned so much and noticed numerous issues. The outdated man mendacity face down on the road is definitely praying. That’s simple for him to do, wait till you see a few of them who does that on the slope of a mountain via a cross… actually for kilometers at a time and you’ll be amazed at what man can actually do. I might like this lens coz I actually prefer it.

Not many culture like these exist within the age of capitalism and media. The primary query that we would all not be asking as soon as in Nepal could be "the place’s the distant?" and the first statement we’d all be used to saying could be "Brrr! The waters too cold!" I’m wondering if I’d survive a easy life with out tv and all the pieces. The final time I worked in a place where I had no television I only stayed for three months as a substitute of a yr… I believe I wouldn’t be capable to make it out the airport in Nepal… 😀

    And sure… I missed your critiques… 😀
