Environmental NGOs do commendable work in Environmental fields to serve people in need or risk scenarios, but do we know exactly what they are? We want to explain to you now what an NGO is and what its functions are.
What is an NGO and what is its role?Environmental NGOs (as the name suggests) are non-governmental organizations that operate independently of government, to pursue environment protection and sustainable development or political causes related to environment. In other words, they are non-profit organizations that operate mainly in the field of development cooperation and which evidently always does a great job of helping others.
Environmental NGOs can be voluntary associations or large hierarchically structured organizations. When an NGO is established, it usually meets three requirements:• They’re private bodies. ;• They are created non-profit;• They have a mission of solidarity.
In this way, a distinctive feature of Environmental NGOs is that they have a private nature in their organization and the absence of profit-seeking, although Environmental NGOs are supported mainly by private donations and the work of the volunteers involved in them, although some require the services of sector-specific professionals in relation to the role of the particular NGO.Categories of Environmental NGOs and their roleIn addition, the World Bank divided them, regardless of the area of intervention, into two ‘macro’ categories.1. Operational Environmental NGOs whose role is to work directly in the field to develop projects and activities in line with their mission.2. Defence Environmental NGOs, whose role is to be spokespersons for specific causes. The latter often play the role of defense and critical opposition to governments. To this classification we can also add:
• Volunteering Environmental NGOs• Environmental NGOs that organize cooperation projects in emergencies by sending specialized staff• Environmental NGOs that participate and support projects in developing countries by sending volunteers to the territory• Environmental NGOs specializing in studies, research and training of Italian or foreign staff
Among theinstitutions of Environmental NGOs we can alsoadd: the defence of human rights, the protection of the environment or the inclusion of socially weak groups. In any case, organizations do their jobs independently of institutions, national governments and supranational bodies. The relationship with the institutions, however, can be of collaboration and cooperation.
