UPMC employees’ information stolen by a hacker on the dark web

The University Of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is Pennsylvania’s largest health care provider. It includes 40 hospitals and integrates 700 doctor’s offices. It’s a non-profit organization that has a health insurance division.

In December 2013, UPMC had unauthorized access to its human resources management system, Oracle PeopleSoft HRMS. That information included social security numbers, salaries, addresses and other personal information of approximately 66,000 employees. This information was stolen and later sold on the dark web. There, it was sold to people who then used it for identity theft, bank fraud and tax refund fraud.

On July 31, 2018, a Michigan man was arrested and charged with hacking UPMC’s human resource database. He was subsequently indicted on 43 counts of identity theft, wire fraud and conspiracy.

Sean Johnson allegedly used online names like TheDearthStar and Dearthy Star to sell the data on the dark web. A total of 90,000 sets of PII were then sold to buyers on dark web forums. Some of the information included Social Security number, address, date of birth and salary information.

In August 2016, Yoandy Perez Llanes, a Venezuelan national, was extradited from that country. Later that month, he pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and money laundering. He was sentenced to time served plus six months.

Three other individuals were indicted in the same case. All three were accused of using UPMC employees’ identities to file fraudulent tax returns. These criminals sought $2.2 million in refunds. They then converted the funds into Amazon gift cards and shipped the merchandise to Venezuela.

UPMC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this case. UPMC is the largest health care provider in the nation. UPMC is a nonprofit health enterprise that serves more than 3.8 million members and has commercial ventures. UPMC also has a contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Justin Sean Johnson is a 29-year-old from Michigan. He formerly worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and has been known to hack other companies. Using an alias, he hacked the human resource database of UPMC in December 2013. He then proceeded to steal sensitive PII and W-2 data from tens of thousands of UPMC employees.

UPMC employee data was sold on the dark web. Several buyers bought the PII and filed fake 1040 federal tax returns using it. By doing so, they allegedly made hundreds of thousands of dollars. Those who purchased the PII were then able to use it to file fraudulent income tax returns and make purchases on the dark web.

A judge recently ordered Justin Sean Johnson to serve seven years in prison for his role in the UPMC breach. His attorney declined to comment. However, the Department of Justice said that Johnson continued to hack UPMC’s human resources databases in 2014 and 2017.

UPMC has been subject to a long-running legal dispute, and has settled a civil class action lawsuit for more than $2 million. UPMC is now providing free credit monitoring services to all affected individuals.
Dread Pirate Roberts’s motivations for creating the dark web

In 2013, Ross Ulbricht was arrested and charged with seven crimes. The criminal mastermind behind Silk Road, he was accused of operating an online marketplace that sold illegal goods and services, as well as providing an alternative way of making deals in cyberspace. He was found guilty and sentenced to a lifetime in prison.

Originally a website selling illegal drugs, Silk Road was morphed into a nefarious bazaar, allowing users to buy and sell weapons, child pornography and forged documents. It also became a source of blackmail and intimidation.

While many people use the dark web for illegal activities, a number of legitimate businesses are staking a claim to the space. For example, Mt. Gox has announced it will now require identification before buying and selling real-world currencies.

The Silk Road web site is a popular destination among the unwashed, as evidenced by the fact that it receives around 60,000 visits a day. However, the site is not an anonymous one, as drug dealers are arrested for their trades on the site.

As Silk Road is a business, it is expected that the site’s stakeholders will amass millions of dollars in profits. During the first half of 2012, the site grossed roughly 1.2 million USD. Approximately 144,000 bitcoins were seized by the FBI when the website was shuttered.

Ulbricht was arrested and convicted for his role in running the website. His arrest marked the end of a lengthy manhunt that involved numerous government agencies. Ultimately, he was found guilty of money laundering and narcotics charges.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Silk Road was the fact that it was run by a mysterious individual dubbed “Dread Pirate Roberts.” Apparently, this wasn’t an actual person. Instead, Ulbricht had been running the site under a pseudonym. Dread Pirate Roberts was not only a spokesman for the site, but also an aficionado of the Ludwig von Mises Institute, an Austrian think tank. Interestingly, he also favoured the Ludwig von Mises institute’s esoteric videos on YouTube.

The most impressive achievement of all was the website’s ability to process orders worth more than half a million dollars a month. The traffic on the website exploded after media attention was focused on it.

Using a site known as Tor, the Silk Road site was able to operate in the dark. This included a secure communications system that encrypts user data and allows encrypted communication between participants. Despite the site’s esoteric capabilities, it was targeted by a sustained cyberattack.

The Silk Road site is just one example of the dark web’s many uses. Other sites have been used to trade phony documents, forged cash, and a variety of other illicit products. These sites are often targeted by law enforcement because their content and functionality are not easily tracked.
Season 2 premiere date

Meanwhile, the series will also be introducing a few new characters, including Elijah Wood, whose “Citizen Detective” character will be one of the more prominent in comics. Kate Fleetwood will reprise her role as Liandrin Guirale from the show’s acclaimed first season. Her character has a darker side, and fans will find out more about her in the upcoming second season.

Also on the way is the premiere of the new Wheel of Time, a Prime Video fantasy series. Season two will bring in more characters, including Rufus Sewell’s Mark, and Gabriel Akuwudike’s Adar. The Wheel of Time will be the most watched Prime show of the 2021 calendar.

There are also some surprises in store for Season 2. The hidden wiki link Rafe Judkins, the show’s executive producer, teased one, which is probably the most important. He also confirmed that Seanchan will have a role to play in the season. However, he failed to tease the details of the episode title.

All told, the new and improved Amazon Prime Series has some impressive casting and will be more of a production than the first.
