The Secret To Making Neon Nail Polish Brighter

Perhaps stating the obvious, but neon is a huge trend in nails this summer. All our favorite brands have released highlighter-bright collections for the warmer months – OPI, Morgan Taylor, China Glaze, Salon Perfect. But neons can be tricky to wear – while it looks killer in the bottle, it can look less-than-stellar on the nail. This is partly because the color pigments required for a fluorescent are very complex to produce, and partly because the colorants required to make true neon aren’t FDA-approved. Yep, neon polish is technically illegal in the USA. There is an easy way to fix this though…

White. Primer. Lay down a coat of white nail polish before you paint on your neon, and you’re guaranteed to get a much brighter pop of color. The white base doesn’t need to be perfect (we all know what a beast white polish can be) but it will be enough that it neutralises the color of your nails and gives the neon a beautiful canvas on which it can do it’s thing (i.e. be bright and fun).

You can pick up white polish on the cheap – look out for $1.99 Sinful Colors next time you’re at the drug store – or check out OPI Put A Coat On!, which is a milky white base coat designed to go under your brights, and means you can skip the base coat step. Convenient!
