Purple Pedicures for PAD Awareness

Did you know that almost 10million Americans are affected with a condition called Peripheral Artery Disease, more commonly known as PAD? We hadn’t heard of it until the team at My Leg My Choice tweeted us about PAD awareness month.

PAD is more common than you think, and can lead to leg amputation and even death. It occurs when there is a buildup of cholesterol and plaque in the arteries that causes decreased blood flow to the legs and feet. It approaches almost silently with mild symptoms, such as tired, crampy legs, and purple or red skin discoloration. In extreme cases you’ll get cold painful extremities, and sores on legs, feet or toes that don’t heal.

Those most at risk for PAD are people who have smoked, have high blood pressure or cholesterol, diabetics, or are over 50 years of age.

The good news is that PAD is a chronic progressive disease meaning it gets worse over time, so the earlier your treat it the better the outcome. Lifestyle changes such as better diet and nutrition, a strict exercise plan, stopping smoking, and management of diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol are just some of the ways that can help decrease the risk of amputation.

To help spread the word about this debilitating disease the team at My Leg My Choice have come up with a fun campaign ‘Purple Pedicures for PAD Awareness’. Throughout September they are asking patrons to paint their toe nails purple and share the end result on social media using the hash tags #Purple4PAD #MLMC #PADawareness.
