Nail Healing – Part 1: After Damage

At Pedicure.com we are not only committed to ensuring you stay on top of the latest nail trends, but also making sure your nails are in tip-top shape! So we are starting a three-part series on how to heal your nails after damage, nail biting and harmful gel/acrylic nail removal. Check back here next Thursday for the next installment!

In this first installment we are focusing on how to heal your nails after damaging them. Everyone has done it at some point in time, whether they shut their finger in a door (major ouch) or just let them dry out and split. We have some great ways to heal your nails and prevent damaging them again.

A massive myth is that you can damage your nails by constantly wearing nail polish, this is just not true! If your nails are constantly splitting and breaking, wearing polish can actually prevent them from breaking and splitting more! Nail polish, especially treating base coats, prevent breakages and protect your nails from the drying effects of water and harsh cleaning products. Editor Mette loves getting a shellac manicure when her nails need a bit of TLC, as it allows them to grow without snapping and peeling plus her nails look great while healing!

Rehydrating your nails is a wonderful way to heal them after they have split and peeled. For a hit of hydration, use a rich hand-cream as well as cuticle oil on your hands and nails at night, then wear cotton gloves while you sleep. You will wake up with super smooth hands AND much healthier nails.

If your nails are beyond these more simple repair jobs, invest in a treatment for damaged nails at your salon. We recommend IBX System, which uses heat and UV light to penetrate a blend of jojoba and avocado oil, as well as strengthening agents, deep into the nail. This fuses your nail layers together with flexible polymer links, plus it only takes 45 minutes and will keep your nails healthy for months! You can find your nearest salon offering this here!

Let us know if you have hurt your nails in the past and how you got them back into shape!
